About

Xiangyong Wen is a pioneering roboticist whose research pushes the boundaries of autonomous multi-robot systems in extreme environments. His primary focus lies in swarm robotics, mutual localization, and time synchronization—critical challenges for deploying robot teams in unstructured, GPS-denied settings. Wen’s landmark work, “Swarm of micro flying robots in the wild” (2022), has garnered 539 citations, demonstrating its profound impact. In this study, he demonstrated the first-ever autonomous swarm of micro aerial vehicles navigating dense, cluttered forests, solving the formidable problems of unknown surroundings, narrow corridors, and real-time swarm coordination. Beyond this breakthrough, Wen has advanced the theoretical foundations of multi-robot cooperation. His work on bearing-based relative localization (2023) provides certifiable and robust solvers for estimating relative poses among robots with partially mutual observations, a key enabler for scalable swarms. Most recently, he has tackled the often-overlooked issue of time synchronization in mutual localization (2024), showing how even small timing errors can degrade estimation accuracy and proposing novel solutions.
