Weijian Jiao is pioneering the next generation of autonomous soft robotics by eliminating the need for traditional electronics. His research centers on distributed, embodied control strategies that embed sensing and actuation directly into a robot's soft structure. Jiao’s most impactful work, a 2023 paper with 169 citations, introduces a modular strategy for creating electronics-free soft robots that can sense and respond to their environment using only pneumatic logic.
