About
Hang Shu is pioneering the frontier of electronics-free soft robotics, developing autonomous systems that sense and respond to their environment without traditional electronic components. Their landmark 2023 paper, "A modular strategy for distributed, embodied control of electronics-free soft robots," has garnered 169 citations and introduces a transformative approach where control logic is embedded directly into the robot's soft body. This work replaces bulky microcontrollers and sensors with cleverly designed pneumatic circuits and material-based feedback loops, enabling distributed, embodied control that is both simpler and more robust. Shu's research centers on creating modular, stimuli-responsive components—such as the valves described in their 2024 work—that allow soft robots to perform complex tasks like locomotion and object manipulation autonomously. By eliminating reliance on mechatronics, Shu addresses critical limitations in form factor and reliability, opening new possibilities for safe human-machine interaction and deployment in challenging environments. Their contributions represent a paradigm shift toward truly autonomous, compliant robots that can operate in remote or hazardous settings where traditional electronics fail.
