About

T. Tamagawa is a gamma-ray burst (GRB) astrophysicist whose work focuses on the earliest moments of these cataclysmic cosmic explosions. Tamagawa’s major contribution lies in bridging the critical observational gap between internal and external shock phases in GRB afterglows. In their most cited work (38 citations), Tamagawa presented early-time broadband modeling of GRB 051111, demonstrating how contemporaneous optical imaging from the KAIT robotic telescope, combined with exquisite multi-wavelength follow-up, can pinpoint when a burst’s internal engine activity ends and its interaction with the surrounding medium begins. This research has been instrumental in refining our understanding of GRB central engines and jet physics. Tamagawa also pioneered the WIDGET telescope project, a wide-field robotic system designed to catch optical flashes before or coincident with the GRB trigger from HETE-2. By covering 80% of HETE-2’s field-of-view, WIDGET represented an innovative approach to capturing elusive prompt optical emission.
