About

N. Butler is an observational astrophysicist whose career bridges cutting-edge instrumentation development and the study of high-energy transient phenomena. Best known for pioneering robotic telescope systems, Butler has been instrumental in designing and deploying facilities dedicated to the rapid follow-up of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and other cosmic transients. His work on the RATIR camera and its integration with the 1.5-meter Harold Johnson Telescope at the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional — his most-cited contribution with 50 citations — established a highly productive platform for time-domain astronomy. Butler also led the development of DDOTI, a wide-field robotic imager capable of surveying large sky areas in seconds, and contributed to the ambitious COLIBRI/CAGIRE telescope system designed to respond to alerts from the SVOM satellite mission. His early research into GRB afterglow physics, including broadband modeling of GRB 051111, helped clarify the transition from internal to external shock emission.
