About
Shinkichi Inagaki is a robotics researcher whose work centers on locomotion control for multi-legged robots, with particular expertise in biologically inspired control architectures and adaptive gait generation. His most influential contributions emerge from his development of Central Pattern Generator (CPG) models for decentralized multi-legged robotic systems. His 2005 paper introducing the Wave CPG model for gait generation and walking speed control has garnered 91 citations, establishing him as a leading voice in autonomous robot locomotion, while his foundational 2003 CPG work has accumulated an additional 58 citations. Perhaps his most distinctive intellectual contribution is the Follow-the-Contact-Point (FCP) gait control paradigm, introduced around 2009–2010, which elegantly enables centipede-like robots to navigate uneven terrain by having each leg sequentially contact the same ground points as its predecessor. This framework has proven remarkably generative, spawning extensions into hexapod adaptation, operator-guided navigation, spinning gaits, and model-checking-based parameter validation. More recently, Inagaki has broadened his scope to include tractor-trailer mobile robot motion planning in constrained environments. Across his career, his research collectively reflects a sustained commitment to decentralized, biologically plausible control strategies that make complex robotic locomotion practical and robust in real-world conditions.
