About
Shigemi Nagata is a pioneering robotics researcher whose career has been defined by two deeply interconnected themes: neural network-based robot control and multi-robot cooperative positioning. Beginning in the early 1990s, Nagata broke ground with his work on hierarchical neural networks for mobile robot behavior control, demonstiting how structured learning algorithms could enable autonomous robots to interpret sensory input and make decisions — foundational contributions that earned over 100 citations. His most celebrated achievement, however, is the development of the Cooperative Positioning System (CPS), a novel framework in which multiple robots alternate between stationary and mobile roles to function as dynamic landmarks for one another.
