About
Shahrooz Shahin is a robotics researcher whose work spans intelligent manipulation, autonomous decision-making, and bioinspired design for mobile and industrial robots. His research focuses on integrating computer vision and adaptive control to create robots capable of interacting with unstructured environments. Shahin’s most notable contribution is a vision-based self-adaptive gripper for robotic waste sorting, which uses real-time visual feedback to adjust its grip on recyclable materials—a key innovation for sustainable recycling economies. He has also made significant advances in mobile robotics, including the control and simulation of spherical rolling robots using LQG controllers and the development of four Mecanum-wheeled platforms operated via soft-robotic gloves. More recently, his work on adaptive anchoring modules, inspired by the Chilean lamprey’s mouth, enables robots to autonomously attach to surfaces using spines or suction, enhancing their mobility and manipulation in complex terrains. With over 40 citations across his published works, Shahin’s research demonstrates a clear trajectory toward practical, autonomous systems that bridge perception, control, and bioinspiration.
