About

Seiki Chiba is a pioneering researcher in the field of dielectric elastomers (DEs), a class of electroactive polymers with transformative potential in robotics, energy harvesting, and smart sensing. His foundational 1999 work on ultra-high strain response in elastomeric polymer dielectrics helped establish the theoretical and experimental basis for modern DE research. Over the subsequent decades, Chiba has consistently pushed the boundaries of what these lightweight, flexible transducers can achieve, demonstrating remarkable feats such as a 0.98-gram DE actuator lifting a 4-kilogram weight at speeds of 97 milliseconds, and more recently a 0.15-gram DE capable of lifting 8 kilograms — achievements that underscore extraordinary force-to-weight ratios.
