Russell Maxfield is a pioneering roboticist whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of omnidirectional vehicle (ODV) technology. His primary research focuses on the design, implementation, and practical deployment of highly maneuverable robotic platforms, with a specific emphasis on smart wheel systems and hydraulic drive mechanisms. Maxfield’s most significant contribution is his leadership in developing the T-series of omnidirectional robots at Utah State University’s Center for Self-Organizing and Intelligent Systems (CSOIS). His landmark paper, “Implementation of an omnidirectional robotic inspection system (ODIS)” (2001, 13 citations), documents the first successful integration of ODV technology into a complete, real-world robotic system, demonstrating its viability for practical inspection tasks.
