Ruide Yun is pioneering the frontier of millimeter-scale robotics, drawing inspiration from nature’s most agile insects to create machines that can jump, crawl, roll, and even take off at sizes smaller than a fingernail. His core research focuses on developing novel high-voltage pulsed actuators and electrostatic drive principles that overcome the fundamental size-effect limitations of power and motion at the microscale. Yun’s landmark 2023 work introduced a 3.4-millimeter flea-sized robot—among the smallest ever to achieve both powerful jumping and fast crawling—using a novel actuator that mimics the explosive muscle power of real fleas. This paper has already garnered 22 citations, signaling its impact on the field. He further advanced multi-locomotion capabilities with a millimeter-scale robot capable of controlled crawling and jumping, and a centimeter-scale electrohydrodynamic robot that can roll, hop, and take off.
