Ruide Yun is pioneering the frontier of millimeter-scale robotics, drawing inspiration from nature’s most agile insects to create machines that can jump, crawl, roll, and even take off at sizes smaller than a fingernail. His core research focuses on developing novel high-voltage pulsed actuators and electrostatic drive principles that overcome the fundamental size-effect limitations of power and motion at the microscale. Yun’s landmark 2023 work introduced a 3.4-millimeter flea-sized robot—among the smallest ever to achieve both powerful jumping and fast crawling—using a novel actuator that mimics the explosive muscle power of real fleas.
