About
Rui-Ying Bao is an innovative materials scientist whose research sits at the dynamic intersection of smart polymers, flexible electronics, and advanced composite design. Working primarily with shape-memory polymers, elastomeric composites, and functional sensing materials, Bao has established a distinctive research identity centered on engineering materials that can sense, respond, and actuate in sophisticated ways. Among Bao's most celebrated contributions is pioneering work on reversible shape-memory polymer (RSMP) composites with segregated conductive networks, enabling both electro- and light-driven actuation — a paper that has garnered over 100 citations since 2019. This foundational work opened pathways for multiresponsive, programmable soft actuators. Bao has further advanced the field through self-sensing actuators incorporating phase-change materials like paraffin wax, achieving tunable stiffness and embedded mechanical intelligence within a single system. In flexible sensing, Bao's designs of hierarchically structured and spatially hetero-structured strain sensors demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of microarchitecture's role in achieving wide-range, high-fidelity mechanical signal detection — work increasingly relevant to wearable technology and soft robotics. With a growing citation record exceeding 340 cumulative citations across recent publications, Bao represents an emerging leader in stimuli-responsive and multifunctional polymer systems.
