About

Rodrigue Loisil is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the complex interactions between aerosols, clouds, and solar radiation, with a particular emphasis on above-cloud aerosol plumes over southern Africa. His major contribution lies in advancing our understanding of the direct radiative effect (DRE) of absorbing aerosols—such as smoke and dust—that overlie low-level clouds, a critical yet poorly constrained component of the Earth’s energy budget. During the AErosol, RadiatiOn, and CLOuds in southern Africa (AEROCLO-sA) field campaign in Namibia (2017), Loisil spearheaded airborne measurements using a Multi-Viewing, Multi-Channel, Multi-Polarization (3MI) simulator and sun photometers. His work demonstrated how these advanced remote sensing techniques can retrieve aerosol properties and quantify their above-cloud radiative forcing with unprecedented accuracy, directly informing climate models. With his most-cited paper accumulating over 10 citations, Loisil’s research has become a benchmark for satellite validation and process studies in aerosol–cloud–radiation interactions. His findings are instrumental for improving predictions of regional and global climate impacts, particularly in biomass-burning regions.
