About
Fanny Peers is an atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the complex interactions between aerosols, clouds, and solar radiation, with a particular emphasis on the radiative effects of absorbing aerosols above cloud decks. Her major contribution lies in advancing our understanding of the direct radiative effect (DRE) of above-cloud aerosols—a critical yet poorly constrained component of the Earth's energy budget. During the AErosol, RadiatiOn, and CLOuds in southern Africa (AEROCLO-sA) field campaign in Namibia (2017), Peers led airborne measurements using a Multi-Viewing, Multi-Channel, Multi-Polarization (3MI) simulator and sun photometers. Her work, published in 2021 and already cited 10 times, provides high-resolution, in situ data that improve satellite retrievals and climate model parameterizations. By quantifying how smoke and mineral dust over low clouds alter radiative forcing, Peers has helped reduce uncertainties in regional and global climate projections. Her research is particularly vital for understanding the semi-direct and indirect effects of aerosols in the southeastern Atlantic, a region where biomass burning aerosols frequently overlie stratocumulus clouds.
