About
Luc Blarel is a specialist in atmospheric aerosol remote sensing, with research spanning aerosol optical properties, photometric instrumentation, and nocturnal measurement techniques. His most influential contribution, a 2001 study on dust aerosol size distribution and optical properties derived from remote sensing (204 citations), established a foundational methodology for characterizing desert dust across the full atmospheric column by combining space-based and ground-based observations. This work remains a cornerstone reference in aerosol climatology. Blarel has made significant technical contributions to the AERONET network infrastructure, including precision analyses of pointing errors and field-of-view limitations in Cimel-318 sun photometers, and laboratory-based intercalibration techniques using integrating spheres. His development of polarimetric retrieval methods for Stokes parameters expanded the analytical capabilities of sky radiometers deployed globally through SONET and AERONET.
