About
Emilio Cuevas is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research has profoundly shaped our understanding of aerosol characterization, remote sensing instrumentation, and dust transport across some of the world's most aerosol-rich regions. Based primarily at the Izaña Atmospheric Observatory in Tenerife, Spain, Cuevas has dedicated his career to unraveling the complex behavior of Saharan dust and other aerosols across North Africa, the Mediterranean Basin, the Northeastern Atlantic, and the Middle East. His landmark 2009 study, leveraging data from 39 AERONET stations, established a foundational aerosol climatology for these regions and has accumulated over 258 citations. Cuevas has been instrumental in advancing photometric instrumentation, contributing to the development and rigorous evaluation of the CE318-T multiband photometer — the first device capable of continuous day-and-night aerosol measurements using both solar and lunar irradiance. He also pioneered nocturnal aerosol optical depth retrieval through lunar photometry, organizing the first multi-instrument nocturnal intercomparison campaign in 2017. His reconstruction of a remarkable 73-year aerosol optical depth time series using artificial neural networks further demonstrates his innovative methodological reach, making him an indispensable figure in long-term atmospheric monitoring science.
