Rafael Iriarte is a leading figure in the field of nonlinear control theory, with a particular focus on sliding-mode control and its application to underactuated mechanical systems. His pioneering work has fundamentally advanced the understanding of how to generate stable, periodic motion in systems with fewer actuators than degrees of freedom—a notoriously challenging problem in robotics and automation.
