Paolo Barattini’s research sits at the intersection of human-robot interaction (HRI) and assistive robotics, with a strong emphasis on standardization and real-world applicability. His most influential work, “A proposed gesture set for the control of industrial collaborative robots” (2012, 50 citations), addresses a critical gap in collaborative autonomous robotics: the lack of a standardized framework for intuitive, portable human-robot communication. By proposing, implementing, and evaluating a common gesture set, Barattini provided a foundational benchmark that enables reproducible HRI experiments and facilitates the transition of collaborative robots from research labs to industrial shop floors.
