Panagiotis Kokkalis is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the vertical profiling and optical characterization of aerosols, with a particular emphasis on mineral dust and urban pollution. His major contributions lie in advancing our understanding of aerosol optical properties through the synergistic use of lidar, sunphotometry, and in-situ measurements. His most influential work, "Low Arabian dust extinction‐to‐backscatter ratio" (2013, 134 citations), challenged conventional assumptions by demonstrating that Arabian dust exhibits significantly lower lidar ratios (33.7–39.1 sr) compared to typical Saharan dust (50–60 sr), a finding critical for accurate aerosol typing and climate modeling.
