Albert Ansmann is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research has profoundly shaped our understanding of aerosol properties, lidar remote sensing, and the role of atmospheric particles in climate systems. Based at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) in Leipzig, Germany, Ansmann has pioneered the use of Raman and polarization lidar techniques to characterize aerosol types across diverse environments — from Saharan dust plumes and African biomass burning smoke to volcanic ash and Canadian wildfire emissions. His most celebrated contributions include establishing aerosol-type-dependent lidar ratio statistics across Europe, Asia, and Africa (697 citations), and developing the POLIPHON method, an innovative polarization-lidar photometer networking technique that enables height-resolved separation of dust, smoke, maritime, and anthropogenic aerosol layers.
