Birgit Heese is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research centers on the vertical profiling and optical characterization of mineral dust and urban aerosols. Her most influential work emerged from the Saharan Mineral Dust Experiment (SAMUM), where she pioneered the use of Raman lidar and airborne high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) to measure Saharan dust properties in southern Morocco. Her 2008 paper on vertical profiling of dust extinction, backscatter, and depolarization ratios has garnered 281 citations, establishing foundational knowledge for dust remote sensing. Heese further advanced the field by integrating AERONET Sun photometer, lidar, and in situ data to distinguish shape-dependent and shape-independent particle properties, with two 2010 papers accumulating over 190 combined citations.
