About

Dr. P. Juergens is a pioneering oral and maxillofacial surgeon whose work has fundamentally reshaped bone surgery by replacing mechanical tools with laser precision. His primary research areas include laser osteotomy, robotic surgical systems, and bone healing biology. Dr. Juergens’s major contribution is the development and clinical translation of the Cold Ablation Robot-Guided Laser Osteotome (CARLO®), a system that uses an Er:YAG laser to cut bone with sub-millimeter accuracy, without thermal damage. His landmark 2015 study comparing laser and mechanical bone cutting (79 citations) established the superior healing and precision of laser osteotomy. This work culminated in the first-in-human application of CARLO® for midface osteotomies in 2021 (31 citations), a breakthrough that moved laser bone surgery from the lab to the operating room. His research consistently demonstrates that laser osteotomies heal faster and more predictably than conventional methods (27 citations in a minipig study). With over 150 total citations, Dr. Juergens has proven that robot-guided lasers can achieve the geometric freedom and accuracy impossible with saws or drills, making complex reconstructions—like mandibular resections with fibula free flaps—safer and more reproducible. His work is now being validated in multicenter trials, cementing his role as a leader in the next generation of computer-assisted, minimally invasive bone surgery.
