Mitsuaki Sugahara is a structural biologist and protein crystallographer whose research has made significant contributions to high-throughput structural genomics, particularly in advancing the efficiency and automation of protein crystallization pipelines. Working within the ambitious whole-cell structural genomics project focused on *Thermus thermophilus* HB8, Sugahara has played a central role in developing and optimizing systematic approaches to protein crystal production at scale. His 2008 study on crystallization screening for the *T. thermophilus* project, which garnered 29 citations, demonstrated how robotic platforms employing multiple crystallization methodologies — including sitting-drop vapour diffusion, hanging-drop vapour diffusion, and microbatch techniques — could be strategically combined to maximize crystallization success rates across large protein libraries.
