About
Mike Blackwell is a pioneering roboticist whose career has bridged surgical navigation, biomechanical testing, and autonomous mobile platforms. His most impactful contribution is the development of an image-guided navigation system for measuring acetabular implant alignment during total hip replacement surgery. This 1998 work, cited over 400 times, provided the first clinical tool capable of tracking pelvic motion and patient positioning in real time, addressing a critical gap in orthopedic outcomes. Earlier, Blackwell engineered the Uranus mobile robot at Carnegie Mellon’s Mobile Robot Lab, a general-purpose indoor base that supported foundational research in autonomous navigation.
