Matthias Wiegner is a leading figure in atmospheric aerosol research, whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of mineral dust transport and remote sensing. His primary research areas are lidar and sun photometry, with a specific focus on the optical and microphysical properties of Saharan dust. Wiegner’s major contributions include pioneering the use of multi-instrument, multi-platform field campaigns to characterize dust. His seminal 2008 paper on the SAMUM campaign, which has garnered 281 citations, provided the first comprehensive vertical profiling of Saharan dust using a combination of ground-based Raman lidars and airborne high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL), establishing benchmark data for dust extinction-to-backscatter ratios and depolarization.
