Junghyun Ryu is a leading innovator in bio-inspired robotics and smart materials, whose work bridges the gap between biological mechanisms and engineered systems. His research focuses on shape memory alloys (SMAs) and structural bistability, creating actuators that mimic nature’s efficiency. In his highly cited 2012 paper (170 citations), Ryu developed a foundational engineering design framework for SMA coil spring actuators, introducing a static two-state model that simplifies the complex relationship between wire diameter, rod diameter, pitch angle, and coil count to predict force and stroke.
