About

Juan Guan is a pioneering researcher in bio-inspired robotics and soft sensing, with a focus on translating unique biological mechanisms into functional engineering solutions. Her most impactful work centers on biomimetic adhesion and flexible pressure sensors. She is best known for developing a biorobotic adhesive disc inspired by the remora suckerfish, a breakthrough that enables underwater hitchhiking on diverse surfaces. Published in 2017, this study has garnered over 300 citations and demonstrates a prototype capable of generating pull-off forces up to 340 times its own weight—a remarkable feat achieved through laser-machined spinules and soft actuator-controlled lamellae.
