Joel S. Schafer is a leading figure in aerosol remote sensing, whose work has fundamentally shaped the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET)—the world’s premier ground-based aerosol monitoring system. His primary research focuses on algorithm development for aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieval, cloud screening, and quality control, as well as the characterization of aerosol properties across diverse environments. Schafer’s most transformative contribution is his leadership in developing the AERONET Version 3 database and retrieval algorithm, which introduced automated near-real-time quality control and significantly improved cloud screening accuracy. These advancements, detailed in two highly cited papers (1372 and 450 citations), have become the global standard for aerosol data validation. He also played a key role in the TIGERZ experiment over the Indo-Gangetic Plain, revealing how intense aerosol loading impacts air quality and climate in South Asia.
