M. G. Sorokin is a leading figure in aerosol remote sensing, whose work has fundamentally shaped the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET). His primary research focuses on the development and refinement of the algorithms and instrumentation that underpin this global ground-truth network. Sorokin’s most significant contribution is his leadership in advancing the AERONET Version 3 database, as detailed in his highly cited 2019 paper (1,372 citations), which introduced automated near-real-time quality control and improved cloud screening for aerosol optical depth (AOD) measurements.
