About

Hisayoshi Muramatsu is a roboticist advancing the frontier of physical human–robot interaction and intelligent motion control. His research centers on ensuring safe, stable cooperation between humans and machines, particularly through novel approaches to force and impedance control. Muramatsu’s major contributions include developing “Involuntary Stabilization” methods for discrete-event physical human–robot interaction—a critical safety mechanism that prevents dangerous force escalation during collaborative tasks. He also pioneered Periodic/Aperiodic Hybrid Position/Impedance Control using separation filters, enabling robots to seamlessly switch between position and force control for precision tasks like assembly and polishing. His work on learning impedance distributions from images via fully convolutional neural networks allows robots to intuitively understand and adapt to their environments. With over 20 citations across his most influential papers, Muramatsu’s impact is growing rapidly. Notable achievements include the design of the ARMS mobile quad-arm robot, which unifies wheeled-legged locomotion and manipulation, and his development of infinite-impulse-response periodic-disturbance observers for high-precision motion control. His comparative studies on haptic guidance for rehabilitation further demonstrate his commitment to translating robotics research into real-world human benefit.
