About
Dr. Hiroshi Ohtake is a pioneering figure in robotic cardiac surgery and bio-inspired robotics. His primary research areas include minimally invasive robotic cardiac procedures, particularly mitral valve repair and atrial septal defect (ASD) closure, as well as the development of novel flying robots with variable wing mechanisms. Dr. Ohtake's major contributions include the first reported outcomes of totally endoscopic robotic mitral valve repair in Japan (26 citations), a landmark study that helped establish the safety and efficacy of this technique following Japan's national health insurance coverage of robotic cardiac surgery in 2018. He also developed the innovative Two-Port Robotic Cardiac Surgery (TROCS) technique for ASD repair, significantly reducing surgical invasiveness. In robotics, he created a pantograph-based variable wing mechanism for cyclogyro rotorcrafts, enabling unique wing trajectories that expand and contract during flight.
