About
Douglas C. Leonard is an observational astronomer whose research centers on the photometric and spectroscopic study of core-collapse supernovae, with particular expertise in stripped-envelope Type Ibc events. His most influential contribution, a 2011 systematic study of multi-band light curves for 25 Type Ibc supernovae — now cited over 424 times — established the first uniform, statistically meaningful sample of such observations, fundamentally advancing the community's understanding of these energetic stellar explosions. Obtained using the robotic Palomar 60-inch telescope, this landmark dataset became a cornerstone reference for subsequent supernova research worldwide. Leonard also contributed to early Hubble Space Telescope snapshot surveys of nearby supernovae, tracking their late-time photometric evolution across ground- and space-based platforms. His pioneering 2005 work on photometric typing of newly discovered supernovae demonstrated, for the first time, that blind photo-typing of young events was achievable in real time — a methodological breakthrough with lasting implications for transient surveys. As a key contributor to the Caltech Core-Collapse Project, Leonard helped build the infrastructure for large-scale, high-quality supernova monitoring that continues to shape modern time-domain astronomy.
