About
S. R. Kulkarni is a pioneering astronomer whose work has fundamentally reshaped time-domain astrophysics. His primary research areas include robotic telescope automation, high-resolution adaptive optics, and the discovery and classification of transient phenomena such as supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. Kulkarni’s most transformative contribution is his leadership in developing the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), a revolutionary sky survey whose data processing and archive paper alone has garnered over 1,170 citations, enabling the rapid detection of thousands of cosmic events. He also spearheaded the creation of the fully robotic Palomar 60-inch telescope (P60) and the Robo-AO adaptive optics system, which together have automated the rapid follow-up of transients and resolved hundreds of binary star systems. His work on the Swift-era optical afterglow catalog and the discovery of GRB 020405 has been critical in understanding dark bursts and the early optical emission of gamma-ray bursts. With a career spanning from pioneering robotic observatories to deep learning tools for supernova classification, Kulkarni’s innovations have made high-cadence, wide-field astronomy accessible and efficient, cementing his legacy as a visionary in modern observational astrophysics.
