About

Dexu Geng is a leading researcher in soft robotics, with a focus on developing variable-stiffness actuators and flexible robotic hands that bridge the gap between compliance and load-bearing capacity. His most significant contributions center on a novel class of pneumatic particle-blocking actuators, which ingeniously combine pneumatic drives, wedge structures, and particle jamming to achieve tunable rigidity. This work, detailed in his highly cited 2023 paper and its 2024 extension, addresses a fundamental challenge in soft robotics: the trade-off between flexibility and strength. Geng has also made notable advances in robotic manipulation, designing a pneumatic four-finger flexible hand that mimics human dexterity while remaining lightweight and simple, and an antagonistic bidirectional rotary joint for safer human-robot interaction. His research on a dual-thumb pneumatic hand and a variable-stiffness flexible arm further demonstrates his systematic approach to enhancing robot adaptability and safety. With over 20 citations across his key publications, Geng’s innovations are laying the groundwork for next-generation service robots that can safely interact with humans while performing tasks requiring variable stiffness and precise control.
