About
Daniel Knopf is a leading atmospheric chemist whose research focuses on aerosol-cloud interactions, particularly in the Arctic and marine environments. His major contributions center on understanding how aerosol particles influence cloud formation, including their roles as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice-nucleating particles (INP). Knopf’s work is critical for improving climate models, as these processes represent key uncertainties in predicting Earth’s radiative balance. Notably, he was a key contributor to the MOSAiC expedition, the largest Arctic field campaign ever conducted. His 2023 study on the annual cycle of aerosol properties over the central Arctic, which has already garnered 24 citations, provides unprecedented vertical profiles of light-extinction, CCN, and INP levels from the boundary layer to the tropopause. This work has significantly advanced our understanding of Arctic aerosol sources and transport. With a career spanning over two decades, Knopf’s research has been widely cited, reflecting its impact on climate science. His findings are essential for predicting future Arctic climate change and its global implications.
