About
D.T. Fourie’s research spans two distinct and impactful domains: advanced robotics for disaster response and medical physics for cancer therapy. In robotics, Fourie was a key contributor to MIT’s entry in the DARPA Virtual Robotics Challenge (VRC), the first competition of the DARPA Robotics Challenge. Their team’s system, detailed in a 2014 paper (19 citations), tackled the formidable task of developing semi-autonomous ground robots capable of navigating hazardous environments—a critical step toward robots that can assist in natural and industrial disasters. This work laid foundational approaches for human-robot coordination under extreme duress. In medical physics, Fourie addressed a pressing clinical need at South Africa’s National Accelerator Center. A 1999 paper (9 citations) proposed a non-orthogonal fixed beam arrangement for a second proton therapy facility, aiming to expand patient access to high-energy proton treatment. By optimizing the use of the existing 200 MeV cyclotron, this work directly contributed to making advanced cancer therapy more available.
