About
Colin Pak Yu Chan is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of soft robotics, intelligent sensing, and infrastructure maintenance. His work is defined by two complementary thrusts: developing advanced flexible electronics using liquid metals, and creating autonomous robotic systems for critical infrastructure repair. In his landmark 2025 study on liquid-metal-based multichannel strain sensors, Chan demonstrated how highly conductive, deformable liquid metals can be patterned onto soft substrates to create wearable sensors capable of classifying sign language gestures via machine learning—a breakthrough that has already garnered 25 citations for its potential in human-machine interaction and assistive technology. On the infrastructure side, Chan has engineered a suite of maintenance robots, including a system for remotely assembling protective jackets on live gas risers and a miniature robotic sprayer for trenchless rehabilitation of underground pipes. His 2022 work on remote rotary mixing and spraying of plural component coatings, cited 9 times, addresses the urgent need for sustainable, non-disruptive pipe repair. More recently, his 2024 in-pipe robot extends these capabilities to long-distance, complex pipe environments. Chan’s contributions uniquely bridge soft materials science and practical robotics, earning him recognition as a leader in creating intelligent, deployable systems that enhance both human capability and urban resilience.
