Chuck Hoberman is a pioneering figure in transformable design, merging art, engineering, and architecture to create structures that can radically change shape. His research centers on reconfigurable metamaterials, deployable mechanisms, and origami-inspired engineering. Hoberman’s most cited work, a 2016 study on a three-dimensional actuated origami-inspired metamaterial (450 citations), introduced a breakthrough in transformable devices with multiple degrees of freedom, enabling applications from expandable shelters and deployable space structures to medical tools and robots.
