Chi-Keng Tsai is a pioneering figure in the field of robotic locomotion, with a focus on dynamic control and adaptive legged systems. His research centers on the real-time computer control of robot legs, particularly the integration of sensing and actuation to enable stable, terrain-responsive movement. Tsai’s most cited work, “Dynamic Computer Control of a Robot Leg” (1985), introduced a control scheme for a three degree-of-freedom leg interfaced with a PDP-11/70 minicomputer, complemented by CSMP simulations to analyze dynamic behavior off-line. This foundational study, garnering 10 citations, demonstrated how computational control could replicate biological motion in machines. Expanding on this, his 1986 paper “Using proximity sensing in robot leg control” (4 citations) tested dual proximity sensors on a prototype leg for the Adaptive Suspension Vehicle at Ohio State University.
