About
Cheolsoo Eo is a leading figure in macromolecular crystallography beamline development, with his work centered on advancing synchrotron radiation instrumentation for structural biology. His major contribution is the comprehensive upgrade of the BL-5C beamline at Pohang Light Source II, transforming it into a highly automated, state-of-the-art facility dedicated to macromolecular crystallography (MX). This upgrade, detailed in his most-cited paper (2021, 5 citations), delivered an in-vacuum undulator beamline that provides X-ray beams with a focal spot size of 200 µm × 40 µm over an energy range of 6.5–16.5 keV, achieving a measured flux of 7 × 10¹¹ photons per second. This work significantly enhances the capabilities for high-throughput protein structure determination, enabling researchers to solve complex biological macromolecular structures with greater efficiency and precision. Eo’s contributions are pivotal for the Korean structural biology community, establishing a world-class resource that accelerates discoveries in drug design and molecular medicine. His expertise in beamline automation and optics optimization marks him as a key enabler of cutting-edge synchrotron science.
