About
Bernd Heinold is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the long-range transport of mineral dust and its impact on climate and air quality. His work is particularly renowned for advancing our understanding of Saharan dust plumes and volcanic ash using a combination of lidar remote sensing and modeling. Heinold’s major contributions include developing a novel lidar-photometer method to retrieve vertical profiles of ash and fine-mode particles, a technique that proved critical during the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption (233 citations). He has also pioneered shipborne lidar observations to track Saharan dust across the Atlantic (83 citations) and validated dust transport models against EARLINET and AERONET data (63 citations).
