About
Annett Skupin is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research centers on the long-range transport of aerosols, particularly Saharan dust, and the development of advanced optical monitoring systems. Her most impactful work, "Tracking the Saharan Air Layer with shipborne lidar across the tropical Atlantic" (2014, 83 citations), provides a landmark observational study of dust transport across the Atlantic. Using shipborne lidar aboard the research vessel *Meteor*, Skupin tracked Saharan dust plumes for over 4,500 km from Africa, revealing remarkably consistent optical properties—including a mean Ångström exponent of 0.1—that characterize the aged dust layer far from its source. This work is essential for understanding dust’s role in climate and marine biogeochemistry.
