About

E. Giannakaki is a prominent atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on aerosol–cloud interactions, long-range dust transport, and the optical properties of atmospheric particles. Her major contributions include pioneering work in validating dust transport models through ground-based lidar observations, most notably during the Saharan Mineral Dust Experiment (SAMUM) 2006. In her highly cited 2009 study, she led EARLINET observations of a major dust transport event from North Africa to Southern Europe, combining Raman lidar data with AERONET Sun photometer measurements to characterize the geometrical and optical properties of the dust plume. This work provided critical validation for dust transport modeling and advanced our understanding of mineral dust’s role in climate forcing. With over 3,000 citations across her publications, Giannakaki’s research has significantly shaped the field of aerosol remote sensing.
