B.T. Khuri-Yakub is a pioneering researcher in acoustic transducer technology, with a career spanning decades of innovation in high-frequency ultrasonic systems and micromachined sensing devices. His foundational work in airborne acoustic wave measurement, beginning in the early 1980s, established critical frameworks for exciting and detecting acoustic waves in air at frequencies ranging from 1 MHz to 8 MHz — work that earned his 1983 study nearly 50 citations and remains a touchstone in the field. Khuri-Yakub has made transformative contributions to solving the longstanding challenge of acoustic impedance mismatch between piezoelectric transducers and air, notably through his development of micromachined 1–3 composites for ultrasonic air transducers, which opened new possibilities for nondestructive evaluation, gas flow measurement, and robotic sensing.
