About

Augustin Mortier is an atmospheric scientist whose research centers on the characterization and remote sensing of aerosol particles—tiny, climate- and air-quality-altering components of the atmosphere. His most impactful work, a 2016 study with 60 citations, systematically compares three advanced retrieval algorithms (GARRLiC, LIRIC, and Raman) applied to multi-wavelength lidar and sun/sky-photometer data. This methodological contribution provided a critical benchmark for the aerosol remote sensing community, enabling more accurate and consistent measurements of particle properties from ground-based networks. Mortier also contributed to the AeroCom Phase III initiative, co-authoring a multi-model evaluation that assessed how well 14 global aerosol models reproduce observed optical properties from AERONET, MODIS, and other platforms. His earlier work at the Iasi, Romania, monitoring station helped identify and classify tropospheric aerosol types during summer 2012, furthering our understanding of regional aerosol variability.
