Anton Pil is a pioneer in the integrated design of mechatronic systems, with a career focused on a radical idea: that robots should be able to physically redesign themselves to improve performance. His key research areas include structure/control co-design, experimental optimization, and rapid prototyping for robotics. Pil’s most significant contribution is the development of a recursive experimental optimization method, detailed in his seminal 1996 paper (76 citations), which simultaneously optimizes a robot's mechanical structure and its control gains through iterative physical prototyping.
