About
Akira Sasaki is a pioneering Japanese surgeon and biomedical researcher whose work spans robotic surgery, minimally invasive surgical techniques, and therapeutic ultrasound technologies. He is perhaps best recognized as a trailblazer in robotic hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery, having been part of the team that performed Asia's first robotic surgical procedure in March 2000 — a landmark achievement that preceded a formal clinical trial leading to governmental approval of the da Vinci® Surgical System in Japan. His early adoption and systematic evaluation of robotic platforms, documented across 52 procedures at Keio University Hospital, helped establish the foundation for robotic surgery in the Asia-Pacific region, earning his work 45 citations in the field. Sasaki has also contributed meaningfully to understanding broader surgical trends in Japan through large-scale analysis of the National Clinical Database, informing policy and practice across gastroenterological surgery.
