About
Adelardo Adelino Dantas de Medeiros is a Brazilian robotics researcher whose career has centered on autonomous mobile robots, control architectures, and robot localization and navigation. His most influential contribution, a 1998 survey on control architectures for autonomous mobile robots (68 citations), established a foundational reference for the field by systematically classifying and comparing the attributes of diverse architectural proposals, helping guide subsequent generations of robotics researchers. Building on this groundwork, he developed and validated a hybrid reactive-deliberative software architecture enabling robots to both respond dynamically to environmental events and engage in forward planning, work that garnered 19 citations. Medeiros has made substantial technical contributions in mobile robot modeling and control, including linear and nonlinear modeling of differential-drive robots, nonholonomic position and orientation control, and smooth point-to-point path generation using parametric polynomial curves. His research extends to probabilistic localization using Extended Kalman Filters fused with odometry and natural landmarks, occupancy-grid-based probabilistic mapping, and Hammerstein system identification for dynamic modeling.
