About

A. Biland is a prominent astrophysicist specializing in very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, with a particular focus on the development and operation of innovative Cherenkov telescope technology. Biland has been a central contributor to the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) project, a groundbreaking instrument that pioneered the use of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM, also known as G-APDs) as photon detectors in imaging air Cherenkov telescopes — a significant technological leap for the field. Among Biland's most notable achievements is helping to establish FACT as the first robotic imaging air Cherenkov telescope, enabling remote operation without on-site personnel and dramatically maximizing the instrument's observational duty cycle. This innovation has proven especially valuable for long-term, unbiased monitoring of TeV-blazars — highly energetic extragalactic objects — generating an unprecedented dataset spanning more than eight years of continuous observation since October 2011 at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos. Biland's published work, accumulating citations across multiple conference and journal contributions, has meaningfully advanced the community's understanding of blazar variability at TeV energies while demonstrating the viability of solid-state photosensors for next-generation gamma-ray observatories.
